POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Relationships- Negotiates pricing and develops and consolidates relationships with a view to promoting new business. May attend industry associations for self-development. Clarifies Underwriting questions and resolves issues with respect to broker, claims, pricing and accounting etc. Internal suppliers of new products e.g. Business development and Marketing for rates, pricing and product description. Purchases underwriting reports on Broker books of business

  • Problem Solving - Uses advanced spreadsheet analysis and investigative techniques in the in the analyzing of portfolio and spread of risk. Exercises judgment and experience in the selection of more complex risks with new risk applications and renewals referring unusual situations to higher levels. May provide guidance to others in the resolution of basic problems.

  • Decision making/autonomy - Makes complex interpretive and application decisions with respect to policies and procedures in their area of Underwriting. Recommends amendments to existing policies and procedures to the next level of authority. Negotiates with Brokers when requests fall within Underwriting policies and procedures, and their individual authorization level. Elevates contentious issues with recommendations to the next level of authority. Plans and leads the execution of small projects.

  • Leadership & Professional development - Gains a broader perspective of the general insurance industry and the Underwriting role as it relates to other functions within the Branch. Maintains a senior level knowledge of company and industry Underwriting policies, procedures and standards within their area of Underwriting. In collaboration with the supervisor, may identify training and development needs. May provide technical training and development support. May provide input with respect to the performance of other employees. Demonstrates work routines and processes to team and/or staff members


REQUIREMENTS

  • A Senior Property Underwriter who has had significant experience in the writing of builders risks insurance
    Should have some knowledge of boiler machinery

  • A good understanding of the policy wordings including manuscript forms and the ability to make recommendations to amend and revise policy wordings

  • Ability to formulate renewal and new business strategies

  • Use complex spreadsheets and interpretative techniques in the underwriting of accounts.

  • Ability to identify problems and makes decisions to resolve it

  • Coaching and mentoring skills

  • Excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills and the ability to build relations with clients and brokers

  • Ability to multi-task and work under pressure

  • A team player with a positive attitude to achieve excellent service delivery

  • Minimum 10 years’ related job experience especially in the underwriting and handling of international industrial and commercial clients.

  • Experience in handling global property insurance programs would be an added advantage

  • Post-secondary education or equivalent training and experience

  • Relevant AIIC or FIIC courses or equivalent training courses or experience

  • Familiarity with the Munich Re rating tool considered an asset

  • Willingness to travel once quarterly for one or two day trips
